With the comic ubiquity of all things Google, this move will not be easy. But it is necessary and it is long overdue. We have watched Google...
- sign a contract with the government of China in which the Chinese version of Google blocks certain word searches such as "Tibet" or "Tianamen Square". Google had a chance to explode the communist censorship in China and allow billions of Chinese to obtain an unfiltered view of the world. Instead, Google saw dollar signs and caved.
- shut down countless videos on YouTube (such as conservative positions or pro-life videos like those from BornAliveTruth.org, etc.). Google says that it will only shut down a video if a review by the company’s customer support department agrees that it is inappropriate, or that the video is on its face in violation of the site’s terms of use. But this has provided unfettered discretion leading to outright censorship a lá Animal Farm ("All [views] are equal, but some [views] are more equal than others.").
- allow only allow pro-abortion ads whenever "abortion" was used as a search term. Google recently backed down from this ridiculous position after threatened legal action, but it would be naive to expect this to be the last time something like this happens.
- shut down anti-Obama blogs on Blogger by allowing Obama minions to "red flag" the blogs in question. Any Blogger user can flag another blog and it will be shut down immediately, presumed guilty until proven innocent. This makes no sense and it's antithetical to the history and traditions of the American experience.
- get involved in the homosexual marriage debate in California. Google joins PG&E and other big-name businesses in CA who have joined those who seek to redefine traditional marriage.
For a company who claims to be apolitical, Google seems to be very comfortable in censoring one side of the political debate.
We are not saying that anyone else who uses Google must decide as we have decided. If you carry our logic to its limits, we would have to virtually stop shopping at any big-box store, never purchase anything made by Nike or Reebok, etc., and basically disengage from modern society. We are not going to do that. But this is one small thing we can do.
